My love for vintage dhurrie rugs started at a very young age. Each dari rug came with its own unique story of my mom and aunts' (I am blessed with 7) youth attached to it. My mom singing, dancing and creating something so unique with her friends and family was simply fascinating. When I visited my aunt recently, I prompted her and other ladies of the village to open their huge trousseau trunks and entrust me with these precious offerings so I may share the love with everyone. All the money associated with the sale is given to them. Although these filled trousseau trunks were given at the time of marriage, their content was constantly replenished with gifts received at all life events such as the birth of a child, marriage anniversary, birthday of grandchildren etc.
Each trousseau trunk typically contained linen, bedding, apparel and other home decor items for entire house/extended family. This included - hand-woven dhurrie rugs, hand embroidered bed sheets/pillow covers, shawls, handwoven tapestries etc. All these items were made with great attention to detail in Indian, rural, predominantly agricultural communities. They have whimsical, bohemian patterns and vibrant colors that represent countryside.
My only hope is that each item finds its own loving owner instead of being packed in a trunk and never be able to see the sun or share its beauty and blessings.
